Eulogy for Things Left Unsaid

Recently I discovered the music of Ólafur Arnalds who is a musician hailing from Reykjavík, Iceland. I instantly fell in love with his Eulogy for Evolution album and while listening to it I found myself seeing images from the film I made for the Twenty 120 project – Left Unsaid. Left Unsaid is a very personal piece for me and something I have fought internally over for sometime.

Originally the piece was designed to have a score and after a number of variations I cut it to the soundtrack of Hecq’s I Am You from his Night Falls album, but because I had talked alot with Ben (Hecq) while he was writing that piece and understood his reasons for it somehow it felt slightly wrong to use it. Just before I released Left Unsaid we were in the hotel at the Flash on the Beach conference and we realised that the film was more powerful by purely isolating the voice over thus creating a very lonely piece which is one of the main themes of the film.

I struggled with this decision for sometime and although I do love the original version a part of me has always wanted to have a score to it so after hearing the recurring theme to Ólafur Arnalds’ Eulogy I wrote to him asking whether I could use the track 00:40 as a score to the film as it worked so well. I’m honoured and thankful to say that he agreed! Now although I don’t particularly view this as a definitive version but I do love the idea of this as a counterpart to the original which is slightly more accessible for those put off by the intensity of the isolated voice over. Check it out here anyway and let me know what you think. Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I had to watch the first cut to compare. I definitely like the added soundtrack. Actually I just bought that album from iTunes so thanks for sharing that.

I think the Ólafur track adds a very subtle emotional punch to the piece.

Thanks for sharing. Very beautiful.

Cheers,
Derek.

Hey Rob,

Love it! At first I thought the voice over was too strong in the beginning compared to the music but it really grew well. The music gives the piece a whole other tone! I thoroughly enjoyed it

Great cut!

P.S. Is that Trajan at the end?

I always found Left Unsaid a strong powerful piece that made me reminisce of the past and think about the future. The new audio really adds to it. I’m glad it worked out this way, that you just had the original version with just the voice-over, because if the audio was added from the get go, others might not been able really to appreciate the context of the voice-over.

cheers!

Thanks, I’m really happy with it and am really happy you guys seem to agree that the music does add something to the piece as a whole without detracting from the original’s strength… @ Rishi yep thats Trajan ;)
Cheers!

That audio is a little too short to be looped like that (if it’s not actually looping this will be embarassing). A longer audio track will make the looping less noticeable. Maybe throw in some kind of a build to the music at some point. Not so much that it upsets the feeling of the film, but just enough that it keeps the score evolving throughout the piece. Really nice visuals man, as always. I like the long still shots, this piece is packed with emotion.

ps, I need you to fire me your real email again, I lost it, because I am a fool.

Hey Nathan, the audio actually isn’t looping and it does build and evolve, do you not think? Thanks though for checking it out!
