Things Fall Apart

A new short piece that myself and my Devoid of Yesterday brother Chris from Dstrukt are working on. Keep an eye on the site for a preview ;) Coming soon.

2 years later…

Previously only viewable at film festivals or on the accompanying DVD that comes with the book, Black Day To Freedom is now available to watch online thanks to the BBC Film Network… check it out here!

NB. I’ve also just added it to the motion section of the main site.

Intelligence

Can you think of 100 different uses for a sock? How would you cope with glasses that turn everything upside down? What’s your emotional intelligence? Can you create a work of art in 10 minutes?

BBC2’s Horizon takes seven people who are some of the highest flyers in their field: a musical prodigy, a quantum physicist, an artist, a dramatist, an RAF fighter pilot, a chess grandmaster and a Wall Street trader, and puts them through a battery of tests to measure their intelligence. Who is the most intelligent?

The Ronin was commissioned by BBC2’s Horizon series to create a set of animated cards that would introduce each of the 7 contestants during the one hour program. Using Steve Chiu’s original illustrations the cards were created in Illustrator and then taken into photoshop and animated in After Effects. Horizon - Battle of the Brains airs on BBC2 Tuesday 17th April 2007 at 21.00. Watch for the animated movies on the main Ronin site in the near future.

Kaeden

Kaeden Kai Shing Chiu born 7th April 8lbs 7oz. The name Kai Shing came from my father who also gave Jordan his middle name of Kai Wai… Kai Shing means successful and humble. Mum and baby and little Jordan all adjusting well!

Colour

Drew Trujillo aka Dr Woohoo, who I had the pleasure of meeting at the OFFF conference in Barcelona last year, has recently been having a play around with analytic algorithms. Woohoo’s Color Analytic algorithms analyze the color palettes from images, organizing the colors based on their frequency distribution (frequency, relative frequency, etc) and central tendencies (mode, median, weighted mean, etc). This information helps determine the size and color of each brush stroke. The above image is a reinterpretation of a photo I took in New York. Check out more here and here… And watch out for the Dr Woohoo vs The Ronin animation based on the same concept… coming soon.

Hard Candy

I picked up Hard Candy over the weekend on DVD and watched it last night after reading very little about it. Disturbing yet beautifully realised this is one film that won’t be leaving your memory in a hurry. Resist the temptation to read too much about it online before you check it out for yourself. A must see.
