Jóhann Jóhannsson

johann

I recently discovered the music of Jóhann Jóhannsson with the amazing IBM 1404 a user’s manual EP and have had it on repeat play for about 3 weeks now! Finding out he was going to be in concert in my hometown I made sure that I was going to be there and went along (sans slr so excuse the dodgy phone camera pics) to check it out! With his collective – Kitchen Motors taking the stage and combining both electronic and classical sounds they produced some breath taking stuff! If you get the chance to check either Jóhann or any of the Kitchen Motors collective out, they come highly recommended! Inspiring.

RTS Awards

RTS

I recently got nominated for a Royal Television Society award in the category of Graphic Design – Programme Content Sequences, for my work on director Gideon Bradshaw’s Making Slough Happy interactive tv show which can be viewed on my main portfolio. Being a Black tie only event I went down all suited up to The Savoy on The Strand in London. Big names such as The Mill and Shynola were also there as nominees in other categories. Unfortunately we didn’t take away an award this time but being a nominee in itself is a bit of an achievement so a big thank you to Gideon for believing in my work to hire me for the project and a big thanks to everyone at the BBC interactive team for putting the work forward!

Finally here in Seoul, Korea for the Adobe Max conference! I’ll be out and about taking photos of anything urban and gritty while giving a presentation on my work on Tuesday at 16.20! Hope to see some of you there and if anyone is interested in modeling for my photography work which sometimes gets translated into designs for magazines then please give me a shout!

Massive thanx to Sumi and the whole Adobe team for bringing me over and also a special thanx to Chris Bush of 3MA for putting this blog together for me :)

I am the sheep that got lost

man on fire

Forgiveness is between them and God. It’s my job to arrange the meeting.

(Man on Fire 2004 Dir. Tony Scott)

Human see, human do

apes

Beware the beast man, for he is the Devil’s pawn. Alone among God’s primates, he kills for sport or lust or greed. Yea, he will murder his brother to possess his brother’s land. Let him not breed in great numbers, for he will make a desert of his home and yours. Shun him; drive him back into his jungle lair, for he is the harbinger of death.

(Planet of the Apes 1968 Dir. Franklin J. Schaffner)

This is our war, not yours…

Do you think if you get General Aidid, we will simply put down our weapons and adopt American democracy? That the killing will stop? We know this. Without victory, there will be no peace. There will always be killing, see? This is how things are in our world.

(Black Hawk Down 2002 Dir. Ridley Scott)

Hymn to the Fallen

I don’t know. Part of me thinks the kid’s right. He asks what he’s done to deserve this. He wants to stay here, fine. Let’s leave him and go home. But then another part of me thinks, what if by some miracle we stay, then actually make it out of here. Someday we might look back on this and decide that saving Private Ryan was the one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole godawful, shitty mess. Like you said, Captain, maybe we do that, we all earn the right to go home.

(Saving Private Ryan 1998 Dir. Steven Spielberg)

Calm

calm

l remember my mother when she was dying.
Looked all shrunk up and gray.
l asked her if she was afraid. She just shook her head.
l was afraid to touch the death l seen in her.
Couldn’t find anything beautiful or uplifting about her going back to God.
I heard people talk about immortality, but I ain’t seen it.
l wondered how it’d be when l died. What it’d be like to know that this breath now was the last one you was ever gonna draw.
l just hope l can meet it the same way she did.
With the same… calm.

(The Thin Red Line 1998 Dir. Terrence Malick)

Love

love

My dear wife.
You get something twisted out of your insides by all this blood, filth and noise.
I want to stay changeless for you.
I want to come back to you the man I was before.
How do we get to those other shores? To those blue hills?
Love… where does it come from?
Who lit this flame in us?
No war can put it out, conquer it.
I was a prisoner.
You set me free.

(The Thin Red Line 1998 Dir. Terrence Malick)
